Crochet: a manly hobby

If you follow me on Google+ or like me on Facebook you will have noticed me posting links to blogs, websites, and Ravelry profiles. This is due to a conversation I had with a friend in the gym crochet is not known for it’s cardiovascular benefits you know we were having a normal “catch up” conversation and I happened to mention my latest project and he said “This will sound odd, but I really want to learn to crochet/knit”, so after a ten minuet lecture on the manliness of crochet I got to thinking “how odd is it to find a male crocheter?” not very. This thought led to the decision to showcase some particularly good crocheters who happen to have a Y chromosome.

So with out pictures again here are a selection of the male crocheters I found:

John Brinegar     I really like this chaps work, he is bi-stitual which always get’s my respect as I CAN knit but I have to stick my tongue out to do it. He designs some lovely feminine items but also has just the right balance to make the transition to “manly” with the seemingly greatest of ease.

Howie Woo      Oh how Howie makes me laugh, his Cute-a-killer is awesome.  I just want to sit, crochet and talk crazy with him all day.

                           This is a crochet insider article by Joshua McKiernan, I think it get’s the point across in an incredibly humorous manor, and I completely agree with rule the fourth.

Nathan Vincent     OMWW, have you seen that locker room? This piece in Crochet Concupiscence just emphasizes all my arguments about granny squares, yes you CAN make acrylic granny square blankets with crochet but that is not ALL you can do.

DAVID BURCHALL  I must admit I really do need David’s advice, I have made a few unisex things but my “manly” section is sourly lacking, though I do actually own the green cardigan pattern third picture down.



Charles Voth       Is Amazing in that he totally rocks the Dali-esqu ‘tash, he is also not too bad at the crochet if I’m honest. I particularly like the idea of the design your own toe up sock.

SO there you have it, shockingly MEN can and do crochet, there is no special ability attached to the second X that makes crochet a woman’s thing it is simply that society preconceptions got stuck in the 1940’s ish with men going out to work and women staying at home and doing “dainty” things.
